Electric Bike Usage On Boise Greenbelt: What's Allowed?

E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming increasingly popular in Boise, Idaho. While some residents are concerned about this trend, the city has outlined rules for their use. Depending on the class of e-bike, it may or may not be allowed on the Boise River Greenbelt.

Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed on the Boise Greenbelt

According to Boise city code, Class 1 and 2 e-bikes are allowed not only in all bike lanes around the city but also on sidewalks and crosswalks throughout the city. Both bikes are also allowed on all 25 miles of the Boise River Greenbelt.

However, Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed on any city sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes or the Greenbelt under the city ordinance. This is because Class 3 e-bikes can reach or exceed speeds of 28 miles per hour.

It is important to note that no e-bikes (Class 1, Class 2 or Class 3) are allowed on Ridge to Rivers trails in the Boise Foothills. The use of e-bikes on certain city-owned Ridge to Rivers trails will only be allowed as an ADA accommodation for individuals with a mobility disability.
