S&C Electric Company was founded in 1911 by Nicholas J. Conrad and Edmund O. Schweitzer as Schweitzer & Conrad Inc. Conrad worked as an electrical engineer under Schweitzer, who was chief testing engineer for Commonwealth Edison in Chicago, Illinois. Both men were involved in the construction of central power stations, in which Commonwealth Edison was a leader in the field.
In the early 20th century, breakdowns of electrical power stations were common. During one such breakdown at the Fisk Street station in Chicago, Schweitzer and Conrad discovered that the cause was a fuse failure. They then developed the S&C Electric Fuse, which was highly innovative and could be used outdoors. In 1911, the two men formed a partnership and began to market their invention. The fuse became very popular and was soon sold in Australia, Germany, Canada, Japan, Italy, England, and the United States, where it dominated the high-voltage fuse market with a 75% share. By 1916, the company was growing so rapidly that Conrad left Commonwealth Edison to focus on S&C.
The onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s affected S&C, causing sales of liquid fuses to decline. However, the company continued to develop new products, including the SM Power Fuse, one of the first solid-material fuses. From 1930 to 1940, S&C was granted patents for 111 new products. During World War II, the company retooled its facility in Chicago to meet wartime industry requirements and developed products such as high-voltage channel selectors for U.S. Navy radars.
In the postwar years, S&C reorganized its product line to focus on highly specialized products for high-voltage circuit interruption. The company continued to innovate and expand its product offerings, developing a new line of switchgear, fuses, and fuse interrupters to meet the increasing demand for electrical power.
