The Salt River Project (SRP) is one of the primary public utility companies in Arizona, encompassing two separate entities: the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, and the Salt River Valley Water Users' Association.
The Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District is an agency of the state of Arizona that serves as an electrical utility for the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was created in response to the unreliable nature of the Salt River, which early settlers in Phoenix depended on for agriculture. The river was prone to both floods and droughts, and a failed attempt to build a dam in 1897, combined with a series of droughts, further heightened the need for a reclamation project. With the passage of the National Reclamation Act of 1902, funding for such projects became available, and the Salt River Valley Water Users' Association was incorporated in 1903, becoming the first multipurpose project started under the act.
The construction of dams was the association's most costly and visible project, but it also worked to construct and improve a system of canals to distribute the water from the Salt River to its members in the valley. In 1906, before the dam was completed, electricity began to be produced from a hydroelectric generator within the dam, and almost all of the electricity not needed for agriculture was sold to PG&E.
Today, the SRP owns or operates eleven electrical generating stations, seven hydroelectric plants, and has energy purchasing agreements with four major hydroelectric stations along the Colorado River. This makes them a major provider of electric service in the Phoenix area.
