General Dynamics Corporation (GD) is an American publicly traded aerospace and defence corporation. It was formed in 1952 with the merger of submarine manufacturer Electric Boat and aircraft manufacturer Canadair.
General Dynamics traces its ancestry to John Philip Holland's Holland Torpedo Boat Company, which was bought by Isaac Rice in 1899 and renamed the Electric Boat Company. Electric Boat was responsible for developing the US Navy's first modern submarines, which were purchased in 1900. Between 1917 and 1924, the company was named the Submarine Boat Corporation. In 1933, Electric Boat acquired ownership of a shipyard in Groton, Connecticut, and delivered the USS Cuttlefish to the US Navy in 1934. During World War II, the company produced 80 submarines for the Navy, but was lacking in work by the war's end.
In 1947, Electric Boat acquired Canadair. By the early 1950s, Canadair's importance had grown to overshadow Electric Boat, and business advisers suggested that Canadair purchase Electric Boat and operate it as a subsidiary. However, on 21 February 1952, Electric Boat was reorganised as General Dynamics, with Canadair as a subsidiary. General Dynamics was incorporated under its present name later that year.
In March 1953, General Dynamics purchased Convair from the Atlas Group. Convair developed the F-106 Delta Dart interceptor, the B-58 Hustler bomber, the Convair 880 and 990 airliners, and the Atlas missile, the US's first operational intercontinental ballistic missile. In September 1957, General Dynamics purchased Liquid Carbonic Corporation, controlling it as a wholly owned subsidiary until a Federal antitrust ruling required its sale to shareholders in 1969.
In 1976, General Dynamics sold Canadair back to the Canadian government for $38 million. By 1984, General Dynamics had four divisions: Convair in San Diego, General Dynamics-Fort Worth, General Dynamics-Pomona, and General Dynamics-Electronics. In 1985, GD acquired Cessna and created the Space Systems Division from the Convair Space division. In 1986, the Pomona division was split up, creating the Valley Systems Division, which produced the Stinger surface-to-air missile and the Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM).
In the early 1990s, General Dynamics sold nearly its entire portfolio except for its military-vehicle and submarine businesses. The company began expanding again in the mid-1990s, acquiring Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, combat-vehicle-related businesses, IT product and service companies, and additional shipyards.
