Electric Dirt Bikes: 450Cc Options With Electric Starters

Electric start dirt bikes are becoming increasingly popular, with many manufacturers now offering this feature as standard. Honda, for example, has made the electric starter standard on its 2018 450 MX models. Other manufacturers offering electric start on some of their 450 dirt bikes include Husaberg, KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki.

Husaberg's FE models

All Husaberg FE models have an electric start feature. This is a useful feature for dirt bikes, as it can be physically and mentally challenging to start a 450cc bike. Other bikes with electric start include the KTM RFS series, the Yamaha WRs and TT-Rs, the Suzuki DRZs, and the Honda 450 MX models.

KTM's RFS series

The RFS series from KTM offers a seamless and efficient starting experience, making it a popular choice for riders who want the convenience and reliability of electric start. This feature can be especially beneficial when navigating challenging terrain or when the bike needs to be restarted multiple times during a ride.

Honda recognised this in 2017 when it made electric start an option on its 450 MX models, and standard on the 2018 versions.

Suzuki's DRZs

Suzuki DRZs have electric start. The DR-Z400E model has a rider-friendly electric engine starter with a lightweight electric starter motor and a compact, maintenance-free battery. The DR-Z400E also has an automatic decompression system that lifts one exhaust valve to provide easy starting. The DR-Z400E has a compact, streamlined engine design with a low engine positioning and an extra-slim, rider-friendly, off-road chassis. The bodywork features smooth transitions between the tail and seat to facilitate machine control on or off the road.

The DR-Z400E is not the only Suzuki dirt bike with electric start. In 2017, Honda made electric start standard on its 450 MX models. One rider has suggested that this may have been inspired by a rider's performance on a Suzuki.

Honda's 2018 450 MX models

The 2018 model also has an electric start feature, which was inspired by Ken Roczen's performance on a Suzuki. The electric start feature is standard on the 2018 450 MX models.

The 2019 model of the CRF450R features new ECU settings, HRC launch control, a Renthal Fatbar® handlebar and adjustable handlebar position. A limited-edition "Works Edition" of the CRF450R was also released in 2019, featuring factory-level suspension, a hand-ported head, and a number of other perks.
