What You'll Learn

Setting up the Wemo Insight Switch
Firstly, you need to download and install the latest Wemo App from the App Store or Google Play store. Once installed, open Settings and enable Wi-Fi. Then, locate and connect to the Wemo with the same Wemo ID found at the back of the Wemo unit you are trying to install. The Wemo ID is the word "WeMo" followed by the model, then three alphanumeric characters. For example, WeMo.Insight.xxx.
Next, launch the app on your mobile device. Make sure that the "Remember Wi-Fi Settings" option is checked so the Wemo App can save your Wi-Fi settings. When prompted, select your router's main Wi-Fi and enter your router's Wi-Fi password. Then, tap "Save".
You can also set up notifications for whenever the switch detects power. Tap on "WeMo Insight" at the top and select one of the three options to determine what you receive a notification about. For example, "power on" will send you a notification when the Insight Switch detects power from the appliance that's plugged in. You can also select "power is on for..." and set a time limit for an appliance to be on before you receive a notification.
Additionally, you can calculate the cost of operating a device based on your currency input. You can find this information on your last electric bill. Take the bill's amount and multiply it by 100. Then, take that new number and divide it by your kWh usage for that month. This will give you your "cost per kWh". After entering this number, tap "Done", then tap the arrow button in the top-left corner to go back. Finally, tap "Save".

Calculating the cost per kWh
The Belkin WeMo Insight Switch allows you to monitor power usage and provides estimates of how much you are spending on electricity. The WeMo app gives you high-level energy usage data, such as how long a device was on during the day, its estimated monthly cost, and the average and current wattage usage.
To calculate the cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh), you can use the following formula:
Cost per kWh = Total Bill Amount x 100 / Monthly kWh Usage
For example, if your total electricity bill amount is $75, you would multiply it by 100 to get 7,500 cents. Then, you would divide that number by your monthly kWh usage. So, if your monthly kWh usage is 1,500 kWh, your cost per kWh would be:
7,500 cents / 1,500 kWh = 5 cents per kWh
It's important to note that the cost per kWh can vary depending on your location and electricity plan. Some plans have different pricing components, such as base charges, TDU delivery charges, and energy charges, which can affect the average price per kWh. Additionally, the cost per kWh for individual appliances can be calculated by multiplying the appliance's power rating in watts by the number of hours it is used and then dividing that by 1,000 to get the cost in kWh.
By understanding the cost per kWh, you can make more informed decisions about your energy consumption and explore options like solar power systems to optimize your energy usage and reduce costs.

Using the Wemo app to monitor energy usage
The Wemo Insight Switch allows you to monitor power usage and provides estimates of how much you are spending on electricity. The Wemo app displays power management and consumption settings for each switch.
To set up the Wemo Insight Switch, follow the same process as for the regular Wemo Switch. Once set up, you can turn the Insight Switch on and off in the Wemo app, just like any other Wemo product. You will notice a small virtual LED light next to the power button.
Tapping on the Insight Switch within the Wemo app will bring up details about the power usage from whatever is plugged into it. When an appliance is on, the app will show how long it has been on for, highlighted in green, and the time it was turned on. When the appliance is off, it will show how long it has been since the appliance was last on and the time it was last turned off. The app also provides "Today:" and "Avg day:" fields. "Today:" gives the total time an appliance has been on for the day, and "Avg day:" gives the average time the appliance has been powered on per day.
The Wemo app also provides "Avg when on:" and "Now:" fields. "Avg when on:" gives the average wattage an appliance uses when it is on, and "Now:" gives the real-time wattage use of the appliance. You can change the cost per kWh in the app to get more accurate cost estimates. To do this, tap "Edit" in the top-right corner of the app's main screen, then tap on your WeMo Insight Switch, and tap on "Cost per kWh". Enter how much your electric company charges per kWh.
You can also set up alerts in the Wemo app to receive notifications on your phone if the Insight Switch detects a power flow. For example, you can receive a notification when the Insight Switch detects power from an appliance that is plugged in.
